Good and Bad Effects, Give Advice and Make Suggestions, Possible course of action/consequences

 

From Student's Book: page: 75 {(Pros and cons) i.e. for and against}

Question:  Write about the advantages and disadvantages in exchanges using the verbs from the list given:

Verbs: allow, stop, enable, encourage, force, prevent, discourage, save, make it easier, make it more difficult:

NB: Exchange A and C show Positive result and B and D negative results.

1. Credit cards:

A: Credit cards enable people to go to the market without taking money.

B: Ah yes, but they make it more difficult for people to use them everywhere.

C:  But on the other hand, they make it easier for people to carry wherever they go.

D: Yes, but they discourage you to get money from everywhere.

2. Having a beard

A: Having a beard encourages you to frighten the children.

B: Ah yes, but it stops you looking handsome.

C:  But on the other hand, it saves your shaving time.

D: Yes, but it forces you to itch your cheeks.

3. Television

A: Television enables you to learn many things.

B: Ah yes, but it stops studying and doing other important works.

C:  But on the other hand, it encourages you to have entertainment.

D: Yes, but it forces small kids to imitate bad things.

4. Having a telephone

A: Having a telephone enables you to contact many people.

B: Ah yes, but it makes it more difficult to protect it from your children.

C:  But on the other hand, it encourages you to make an emergency call.

D: Yes, but it stops you spending a peaceful life.

5. Being rich and famous

A: Being rich and famous enables people to make many friends everywhere.

B: Ah yes, but it discourages them to lead a private life.

C:  But on the other hand, it allows them to live a luxurious life.

D: Yes, but it stops them giving time to their family.

6. Having a freezer

A: Having a freezer enables people to keep food afresh.

B: Ah yes, but it makes it more difficult to maintain it regularly.

C:  But on the other hand, it prevents them from cooking food frequently.

D: Yes, but it forces them to pay a lot of electricity bill.

7. Practising English in groups

A: Practising English in groups enables students to remove hesitation.

B: Ah yes, but it stops them learning individually.

C:  But on the other hand, it allows them to express their feelings freely.

D: Yes, but sometimes it discourages them to take part in learning compulsorily.

Question: Rewrite the sentences about supermarkets below, beginning with the words given. Use

an appropriate verb from the list for each answer:

1. People tend to buy more in supermarkets because of the open display.

→ The cut prices in supermarkets forces smaller shops to lower their prices.

8. Because of the competition from supermarkets, it's harder for smaller shops to stay in business.

→ The competition from supermarkets makes it more difficult for smaller shops to stay in business.

Follow-up structures: {The use of ought (not) to, might as well, there's no point in}

a. Sub+ ought(not) to/ might as well + v1+Obj

b. There's no point in +v4 (noun or gerund)

NB: remember that:-

1. Ought to is used to show that it is good thing to do or do things compulsorily.

2. Ought not to is used to show that it is a bad thing to do or you should not do it.

3. Might as well is used to show that you may do it. It won't do any harm.

4. There's no point in is used to show that there's no meaning or advantage of doing something.

Question: Change the suggestions below using ought to, ought not to, might as well or there's no point in:

Example:

Let's not take the lift- he only lives on the first floor.

→ There's no point in taking the lift.

1. Don't take your children to see that film--it'll frighten them.

→ You ought not to take your children to see that film.

2. Let's not sell it--it's not worth anything anyway.

→ There's no point in selling it.

3. Why don't we give it away-- it's not worth anything anyway.

→ We might as well give it away.

4. Don't ask him-- he doesn't speak English.

→ There's no point in asking him in English.

5. Why don't you take a pullover-- you've got plenty of room in your case.

→ You might as well take a pullover.

6. Why don't you take a pullover-- it might turn cold.

→ You ought to take a pullover.

7. Let's not talk about it now-- the children are listening.

→ we ought not to talk about it now.

8. Let's not argue about it-- that won't solve the problem.

→ There's no point in arguing about it.

Question: complete the following sentences with a) there's no point/ it's not worth b) might as well:

1. Since they don't appreciate good food anyway…….

                It's not worth getting a bigger one.

C: Yes, you might as well repair the old one that we have.

5. May be we ought to keep some of this ice cream for Mary.

A: May be we ought to keep some of this ice cream for Mary.

B: No, there's no point in keeping some of it for her—it's melting.

                It's not worth keeping some of it for her.

C: Yes, you might as well buy another one when she arrives.

6. Do you think we should go to school today?

B: No, there's no point in going to school today—it's holiday today.

                It's not worth going to school today.

C: Yes, you might as well go to the public library for reading.
